Cedar Village Driving Assessment Program
The Cedar Village Occupational Therapy Department is now offering a driving assessment program to provide objective information about a person’s ability to drive safely. This off-road evaluation includes assessment of perception, cognition, and attention skills, reaction time, active range of motion and strength, as well as vision testing and knowledge of road signs. The driving assessment is recommended for any licensed driver to assure safe operation of a motor vehicle and takes approximately 1 ½ hours to complete. All assessments are conducted by a Cedar Village Occupational Therapist.
CedarVillage has partnered with a local driving school for the in-car portion of the assessment in a dually equipped vehicle following successful completion of the off-road evaluation.“Many patients successfully complete our rehab program after an illness or injury and return to their independent lifestyle in the community,” states Deborah Tyler, Cedar Village Director of Rehabilitation.“Although they are well prepared to resume routine daily tasks, the skill of driving a motor vehicle is much more complex. It has become increasingly more obvious that we must address driving safety, not only for our rehab patients, but also for members of our community who may have concerns about their safety behind the wheel.”
Carol Silver Elliott, Cedar Village CEO/President commented, “As part of our CedarVillage outreach, we are proud to offer this program to seniors in our community. Our goal is to insure that seniors will be able to operate a car safely and to work with their family members who may question whether their loved ones are safe behind the wheel.”
